VenTESOL members, assembled at the 33rd National Convention in Barcelona, Anzoátegui State, on May 30th and 31st, 2015, overwhelmingly approved the nominations to the Executive Board positions, thereby entrusting these fellow VenTESOLers with the following offices:
Mary Allegra - President
M.S. in Applied Linguistics and Graduate Specialist in TEFL from Simón Bolívar University, Associate English Phonetics and Phonology Professor at undergraduate and graduate levels of the Modern Languages Dept., Faculty of Education, University of Carabobo (UC), Chair of English Phonetics and Phonology at UC since 2007, Mary co-authored the book “Pronunciation Book One”, American English Course Series, and is writing a new pronunciation book. She was part of VenTESOL Region 1 organizing committee in 2007, VenTESOL 2nd Vice-President, 2011-2013, and VenTESOL 1st Vice-President, 2013-2015.
Jesus Ernesto Lisboa - 1nd Vice-President
A multifaceted professional with undergraduate and graduate diplomas in English, French, Tourism, Language Teaching, Translation, and a Master’s Degree in International Management earned from the University of Strathclyde, Scotland, he has taught English, French, and Spanish, conducted workshops on a diversity of topics both in Venezuela and abroad, and also done volunteerism in VenTESOL. Ernesto currently teaches at Obair, a language center in Caracas, and UPEL-IPMAR in Maracay.
Jurate Kukanauza - 2nd Vice-President
SUNY, PhD F&SLE, currently Professor Emeritus from University of Carabobo (UC), earned both her diploma as EFL Professor and her Master’s Degree in EFL from UPEL-IPC. Her graduate specialties also include Teaching of Higher Education and an Advanced Certificate in EdTech. She has taught extensively in many ELT fields, such as phonetics and phonology, ESP, didactics, as well as joined inter-institutional cooperation commissions and chaired academic departments during her tenure as an ELT professional at UC. She is also part of VenTESOL Region 1 grassroots legacy which has in turn inspired our Past President’s initiatives.
Johannes Rojas - 3rd Vice-President
UC, B.A. in Education, English Major, Johannes is completing his graduate studies in TEFL and conducting research on best practices for EFL teachers among Puerto Cabello regional schools also for UC. He has held several positions as a Phonetics and Phonology intern, ELT instructor at language academies and at UNIPAP, heading the Modern Languages School. Johannes is also CEVAC’s Academic Director. Influenced by the volunteering spirit at FACE-UC early on during his teacher training years, he has served VenTESOL in state, regional, and national capacity.
José Zapata - Secretary
José Zapata earned his ELT degree at UPEL Maturín in 2008, where he is completing a Master’s degree in Education, Higher Education Major. He has been teaching English since 2007 to teens and adults. In 2013 he became VenTESOL Anzoátegui State Representative, then organized two VenTESOL regional events, and co-chaired the 33rd National Convention, in Barcelona, Anzoátegui State, May 30-31, 2015. He has also organized several spelling bee competitions in Monagas and Anzoátegui.
Miguel Perez - Communications Coordinator
Miguel Perez is an EFL teacher graduated from Universidad de Carabobo with teaching experience in pre-primary, primary, secondary and tertiary level. His main areas of interest are ICT and Learning Technologies in ELT. He has been an active VenTESOL member since 2010 working as a State Representative in Yaracuy state. He is also VenTESOL Communications Coordinator 2013-2015, and Head Teacher at MFL Academy in Yaracuy. He is currently taking a postgraduate course in E-learning at UCLA in Lara State.
Andrés Ramos - Editor
UCV, B.A. in International Relations, he joined the ELT community, as he completed graduate studies in Oil Policy at UCV and underwent teacher training and development in Caracas. He has held EFL teaching, training, and management positions performing also as an academic consultant, serving schools, universities, language academies, and communities of practice with workshops and seminars, while currently working at CVA Las Mercedes, being a freelance translator and ELT materials writer. An active member in Region 6, Andrés has also contributed development ideas to VenTESOL boards and been a collaborating and networking fixture on our social media.
Pedro Escalante - Treasurer
UC, B.A. in Education, English Major, Pedro is currently undergoing Simón Bolivar University’s professional development program in natural languages and their applications. He has built marketing and financial skills at different jobs’ training programs prior to his ELT studies. He has held TEFL internships and professorships at UC as well as elementary and high schools in Valencia, Carabobo State. An English Immersion Camp alumnus, he has witnessed first-hand and embraced the importance of community service for professional development, thereby actively helping in VenTESOL Region 1 initiatives.
Who will faithfully discharge their duties for the sake of all VenTESOLers, as constituents of our ELT community of practice, called in turn by our new Executive Board to follow their volunteering lead into expanding peer networking, professional development, grassroots action, and ELT community advocacy.
